Hand tool use is essential for most woodworkers. The fastest way to become skillful is to see these techniques demonstrated and then practiced with close supervision. For centuries, this is the way woodworking has been taught.

Whether mortising a door jam for a new lock set, strike plate or hand cutting joinery, tips from expert craftsmen will make your work much better. Find out if hand tool use is right for you with our effective professional instructors.

Learn sharpening techniques and how to condition chisels and hand planes. Lay-out and cut the classic through mortise and tenon joint, using a mortise chisel, hammer and a handsaw. Also featured is truing, squaring and smoothing lumber with hand planes. Emphasis is on Japanese and Western planes, but also see home made planes from other countries. Making the bench hook project is fun. Especially challenging are two tapered dovetail dados.
