and shaping wood. See many examples of specialized hand
tools and learn about their designs, steels, wood & metal composition, and uses. Learn
sharpening techniques and how to condition chisels and hand planes. Lay-out and cut the
classic through mortise and tenon joint, using a mortise chisel, hammer and a handsaw.
Also featured is truing, squaring and smoothing lumber with hand planes. Emphasis is on
Japanese and Western planes, but also see home made planes from other countries. Making
the bench hook project is fun.
Especially challenging are two tapered dovetail dados.
You will use many types of planes such as scrub, jointer, jack, smoothing, rabbet, router,
and dovetail planes. NOTE: It is permissible to attend these classes without bringing
tools & or without participating in the hands on opportunities, but the purpose of
this course is for students to be assisted by an expert to improve their hand tool skills.
You are expected to bring a minimum complement of hand tools and sharpening supplies.
Scott is very generous sharing his planes in this class but we could use yours to share as
well. We especially need more scrub and specialty planes. Bring your sharpening stones,
½", ¾" and 1-1/4". chisels, Ryoba saw or rip & crosscut saws, mallet,
marking gauge, square, marking knife, or scratch awl & pencil. This class is quite a
workout, but extremely satisfying. Tip: Taking the sharpening class before taking this
class is extremely helpful.
