Hand Cut Dovetail Joinery |
| See how easy
and fun hand cut joinery can be. Watch the instructor work while sharing valuable tips.
Learn how to design, layout, saw, chisel, and pare pins and tails to fit. There is no
mystery to hand cut joinery, but practice in a closely supervised workshop is
indispensable. Practice making a single dovetail joint, multiple
pins and tails of different sizes and half blind joints.
Bring hearing protection and your chisels sharpened and ready for use, a dovetail saw, marking
gauge, pencil, square, Bevel Square (adjustable), sharpening stones and mallet
or hammer. A small square is helpful. A Tormek
sharpening system will be available. Tip: Register early for this class as it occurs only
once in the time schedule, on Sun November 18th, 2007
TIP: Consider preparing your chisels in a sharpening
class so all bench time is available for cutting joints.

Hand Tools and Planing
Workshop - Scott Wynn is a knowledgeable and highly skilled hand tool craftsman.
His hands-on workshop gives an overview of most hand tools for joining and shaping wood.
See many examples of specialized hand tools and learn about their designs, steels, wood
and metal composition and uses.
Learn sharpening techniques and how to condition
chisels and hand planes. Lay-out and cut the classic through mortise
and tenon joint, using a mortise chisel, hammer and a handsaw. Also
featured is truing, squaring and smoothing lumber with hand planes.
Emphasis is on Japanese and Western planes, but also see home made
planes from other countries. Making the bench hook project is fun.
Especially challenging are two tapered dovetail dados. You will use
many types of planes such as scrub, jointer, jack, smoothing,
rabbet, router, and dovetail planes. This class is quite a workout,
but extremely satisfying.
